Board Members

Jennifer Karr

Jennifer graduated from Muscle Shoals High School and the University of Alabama.  She attended Capital University Law school and passed the bar in West Virginia and Alabama.  She is married to Dr. Aaron Karr and they have two kids.  Jennifer currently coaches junior high basketball and serves on the Colbert County Medical Alliance and the Helen Keller Foundation.  She enjoys cooking, traveling and watching her kids participate in their various activities.

Leigh Smith, CRNP-BC

Leigh graduated from Lauderdale County High school in 1983.  She graduated from the University of North Alabama with a degree in nursing and the University of Alabama Birmingham with a MSN in Nursing adult NP and Womens Health NP.  Leigh worked for 24 years for Helen Keller Hospital in the Women’s and Children’s services line, serving in many different roles. In 2013, Leigh Joined Shoals Primary Care where she has worked along side many wonderful physicians.  She is currently the Nurse Practioner in Lexington and finds it a joy to serve the community in which she grew up in.  She has one son who is a senior at Brooks High school. Leigh enjoys time on the river, traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Fuzlullah Pathan Syed

Fuzlullah graduated with AP distinction from Florence High School and currently attends UAB where he is majoring in Biology and Philosophy. He is the oldest son of Dr.Faizullah Syed whose name the scholarship is in. He plans on attending medical school and later becoming an internal medicine doctor. He is currently the president of the Muslim Student Association at UAB, and enjoys water sports, philosophy, religion and business. He plans on continuing the dreams of his father and giving back to the people of Alabama.  

Hannah Syed

Hannah graduated with honors from Florence High school and currently attends UAB where she is majoring in biology, minoring chemistry, and is taking a fast-track master’s program for a MPH in Public Health. Inspired by her father, she plans on attending medical school and later becoming an internal medicine physician.  She currently is involved as a Teacher’s Assistant for chemistry, student government Senator, and the Red Cross, GEAR UP clubs at UAB. She enjoys volunteering, learning, and her favorite hobby is skiing in the mountains of Colorado.

Dr. Salam Syed

Dr. Syed was born and raised in Swat Valley, Pakistan.  He obtained his medical education from Russia.  He is currently practicing medicine in Wisconsin.  Dr. Syed is married to Saadia Syed and they have three children.  He enjoys hunting, skiing and traveling.

Kerry Underwood

A graduate of the University of North Alabama, Kerry has been a Shoals resident his entire life.  In addition to practicing as a Certified Public Accountant since 2003, he is now in his second term as Mayor of the city of Tuscumbia.  Being a part of a foundation that helps students with their medical studies by scholarship and remembers my friend, Dr. Faizullach Syed is both an honor and a service to the community that so desperately needs their profession.
